Words

I was just emailing our buddy Mr. Ollie, and recalled a signoff that a couple of college kids (me among them, so you can tell this is an old story) tried to use for a bit. We thought it was funny, and maybe it was for a day or two.

Before I tell you what it was, I wanted to ask if anyone else thought of some cute term along the way that juuust didn't catch on. 'Ginormous' is an interesting term. It made the Webster's dictionary this year. Somebody started that one. It caught on. 'Cyberspace' is a good one. William Gibson coined that one in a sci-fi story and probably didn't realize it would catch fire.

This is about one of the words that didn't catch on. Back when Van Halen were a band known by college students, somebody in our li'l group said 'Bombadeedah'. He'd meant to say 'Happy Trails', I think, but was thinking of the Van Halen version of the song that actually starts out with somebody singing "Bombadeedah, Bombadeedah, Bombadeedah..." It may have been done A Capella, thus the pronouncing of the music as opposed to the playing of the music.

It didn't catch fire. No one, I bet, can recall anyone ever closing a conversation with 'Bombadeedah' and walking away. But we could. Only the two or possibly three or possibly one other person who ever reads this post can now sign off their own posts with 'Bombadeedah'. I'll get it. I won't think you're nuts. Some others might get it. They'll think you're pretty... something.

Go on. Try it. Catch fire. You know you want to.

Bombadeedah.
